What is a Le Pho worth?

Most Le Pho oils sell for several thousand to several tens of thousands of dollars. Early silks can bring far more. What yours would bring depends on what it is.

The market

In about 400 U.S. auction results for his paintings since 2018, the middle half sold for roughly $5,000 to $50,000 at hammer, and about one in ten passed $85,000.

His finest silks are a different market. A family in a garden, ink and gouache on silk from 1938, sold for about $2.37 million in 2023, and several other works have passed $1 million.

Signed lithographs usually bring about $500 to $1,500 at hammer.

What decides the price

  • Period and medium. Silk paintings of the 1930s and 1940s bring the most. The oils of the Findlay years are the core of the American market.
  • Subject. Women, mothers and children, and family scenes bring more than flowers alone.
  • Size. Large oils bring more than small ones.
  • Condition. Silk can stain, tear and fade. Oils should be checked for cleaning and old repairs.
  • Provenance. Labels, receipts and exhibition records show where a painting has been.
