What is a Vu Cao Dam worth?

Most Vu Cao Dam oils sell for several thousand to several tens of thousands of dollars. Early silks can bring far more. What yours would bring depends on what it is.

The market

In about 200 U.S. auction results for his paintings since 2018, the middle half sold for roughly $3,000 to $38,000 at hammer, with a median near $20,000.

His early silks are a different market. In September 2026 Conversation d'élégantes au jardin, five young women in a garden painted in ink and gouache on silk in 1939, sold for about $3.69 million, reported as a record for a Vietnamese painting.

Signed lithographs usually bring a few hundred dollars. His sculpture rarely comes to auction.

What decides the price

  • Medium and date. Silk paintings of the 1930s and 1940s bring the most. Oils from the 1950s to the 1970s make up most of the market.
  • Subject. Paintings of figures bring more than landscapes and still lifes.
  • Size. Larger paintings usually bring more, though a fine small painting of a favorite subject can outsell a dull large one.
  • Condition. Check oils for flaking and old retouching, and silk for stains and tears.
  • Provenance. Gallery labels, exhibition records and receipts show where a painting has been.
